They’re cute, wet and come in all shapes, and your dog’s nose is one of their most important assets when it comes to day to day life.
1. THEY CAN SMELL UP TO 100,00 TIMES BETTER THAN US
That’s right! They have up to 300 olfactory receptors, whereas we only have 6 million. That’s why they can probably tell you right now exactly what you had for breakfast this morning and more!
2. THEIR NOSE HAS A DUAL FUNCTION
Your dog’s nose can separate the air they breath into two categories, air they use for distinguishing scents, and air they use for breathing
3. DOGS CAN INHALE AND EXHALE SIMULTANEOUSLY
This is actually really cool when you think that we can only do one or the other (try and you’ll see we’re right!). When dogs sniff their noses move air in and out at the same time to create a circulation of air that is continuous.
4. THEY CAN DETECT PHEROMONES WE CAN’T
Using an organ called the vomeronasal organ, our dogs can sense the chemicals released by their four-legged friends, which is essential when it comes to reproduction, nbehaviour and physiology.
5. THEY CAN USE EACH NOSTRIL SEPARATELY
This one is a real zinger! Our pups can actually use their brains to determine the exact location of a scent by using their nostrils separately. This is the same technique we use with our eyes to locate something three dimensionally!
6. THEY HAVE SOME OF THE BEST SNIFFERS IN THE WORLD
Evolution has made sure that dogs can use their noses for a whole variety of important things since the beginning of time. Most commonly hound breeds have the most impressive senses of smell, but the species as a whole is not to be sniffed at when it comes to those noses!
